Enzo Ferrari created his first car, type 166, in 1948. Previous to that, he worked on cars for Alfa Romeo during the 1920s. The V12 engine was fairly unique at the time. You wouldn't have seen a Ferrari in Fresno during this time. The cars would soon be known worldwide, though, for their extreme performance and very large engines. During the 50s and 60s, Ferrari continued to release new cars with larger and more powerful engines. Models like the 250 GT, 250 GTO and 275 GTB became really popular.
Ferrari was so different and over the top, that they were really popular in Fresno and elsewhere in the United States, even during the 70s and 80s. Those decades were rough on a lot of car companies around the world because of the gas crisis. During the 80s, the brand was featured on the hit TV show Magnum PI. The car became even more popular after that. (The model in that show was the Ferrari 308 GTS in case you were wondering.)
Ferrari is now owned by Fiat, but they still produce some of the world's most intense automobiles. With new models and old favorites, it's quite a sight to see one driving down the streets of Fresno. When you do see one, your eyes are automatically attracted to it because of the smooth lines and style. There's just something about the Ferrari.
