Like the Jeep, the Hummer started its life as a military vehicle. At one time, Hummer was owned by the same company that ran Jeep. Over time, though, they were spun off into their own company that specialized in vehicles for the military. You wouldn't have seen a Hummer in Fresno in the mid or late 20th century because they weren't even designed yet. It wasn't until the 80s when the company won a government contract that the HMMWV (or Humvee as it came to be known as) was produced.
The Hummer was so popular that a civilian version (the Hummer) was created in 1992. This was the original H1. You may have seen one of these on a street in Fresno somewhere, but you can bet it was taking up a lot of room. The original Hummer was really close to the military version of the vehicle. The Hummer was still popular, though. GM took over the brand name and production of Hummers in 1998.
Today, the H1 is no longer available, but each generation of Hummer that comes out maintains a little bit of its past while becoming a little more civilian at the same time (read: smaller and more road friendly.) Even after GM took over and gas prices soared, the Hummer is still a very popular vehicle. You can still see them on the road everywhere if you drive around Fresno long enough.
