Isuzu had its start in 1916 when Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipbuilding and Engineering Company decided they wanted to get into the auto business. By 1949, the name was switched to Isuzu (which means 50 bells), because it's a lot easier to pronounce and looks good on the cars. You couldn't really find an Isuzu in Fresno at this time, but in Japan, they were very popular, at least their trucks. They had cars at this time, but their trucks proved to be more popular.
In the 1940s and 1950s, Isuzu really boomed because their trucks were useful in reconstruction efforts in post-war Japan. They released another car in the mid 50s, but their trucks were still their most popular seller. In the 60s, Isuzu tried releasing several other models of automobiles, but the public was in love with Isuzu trucks. (Although you still didn't see many driving around Fresno in the 60s.)
General Motors teamed up with Isuzu in the early 70s, leading to the introduction of another car, the Gemini. During the 1980s, Isuzu really started to saturate the American market, even in cities like Fresno. For a while, you couldn't drive anywhere without seeing an Isuzu Trooper or two on the road. This really helped cement them as a car company in America.
